just arrived

yes I've been sucked into the vortex of fashionability that is LJ.... :-)

Now I'm musing on how best to arrange my "friends" list. I think what I'd like to do with it is more of an "interesting people" list. I'd like to change the name to that, but I don't think you can. So if you find yourself on my "friends" list, that probably means I have found you and/or your journal interesting f.s.v.o. interesting. But it doesn't mean I am assuming you are officially my friend, which would seem rather presumptuous. And if anyone wants to put me on their "friends" list on the same basis, then they are very welcome.

good! that's that then!

I'm pretty certain that the global header (and therefore the name of your friends list) can be overridden and with it the name of 'friends' as they appear in your journal view pages (but not in other LJ users' friends pages)).

See here: http://www.livejournal.com/developer/varinfo.bml?GLOBAL_HEAD

I haven't tried it myself so I can't be sure, you may need to be a paid member but I don't think you do for this.

I don't think many people think of 'friends' as your actual friends more a list of journals you want to read -- I've seen people use descriptions like 'person collection' before :)

Welcome to LiveJournal by the way.
