BiCon! How fab was that?! V!
Most satisfying things, in chronological order:
- People's responses to the "Fitting & misfitting" workshop (including how interested other people were in the things we stuck on the wall), and how exactly it fulfilled my vision of what it was supposed to cause and catalyse. Yay me for my great power of inventing and manifesting cool things that didn't previously exist!
- Becoming a RBCA (Recipient of BiCon Cake Award). And in such good company as well. That means a lot to me. Thanks
purplerabbits for constructing perhaps the campest kitchest trophy ever devised by humankind (now on my mantelpiece for all to admire), and anyone else who had a hand in cooking that up (haha) or nominating me. And to everyone for being a bi community for me to invent cool things in :-)
Other best things, in chronological order:
- Hanging out with my lovely bi-feminist cronies
ippola and Sarah on the first night.
- Several people being moved to tears by my songs at the gig, and telling me so.
- Giggling and snuggling and talking with
36 in the early hours of Sunday morning after the "no sex" party, and wandering around together the next day being all mutual appreciation society :-)
Other good things, in no particular order:
- Belly dancing! (yay
sanjibabes!)
- There being a no-sex party at all (yay
baratron!), and interesting and affirming discussions of profound connections that aren't about sex, and asexuality as a kind of queer (yay
36!), and all that.
- Meeting new cool people, and catching up with cool people I already knew (please excuse lack of multiple namechecks here).
- Reading an interesting book in my room by myself.
- Seeing
wandra being all happy with Andi and
the_maenad.
- Being next door to
ippola so we could check in in a girly way on what was happening every now and again, and go food shopping together in zeir car while catching up on the gossip (at least when I wasn't navigating) :-)
- Getting a lift to the station at the end from
cujosmurf - thanks!
Somewhat frustrating and/or annoying things:
- Finding out that several people had meant to come to the Single Bass gig but had missed it, apparently mainly because at 8pm (notwithstanding the programme and posters) it wasn't obvious that we were about to start. Sorry people. It never occurred to me that that might be a problem, or I'd have asked someone to do "town crier".
- Finding out that the Noshers' Network idea hadn't made it into the programme timetable, or indeed the programme at all, despite having been set up and described in plenty of time for that. But it worked anyway - yay!
- My FABULOUS MEGAMIX did NOT get voted into the DIY disco!
lovingboth tells me it was 18th out of 65, though.
Worst moment (serious):
- Getting stressed on Thursday night because I couldn't sleep properly because of people giggling in the courtyard, and being in that place where you really don't wanna make the effort to get up and ask them to go away because then you'll wake up even more. But luckily they stopped eventually by themselves, and the team did a good job the following night of enticing people to go elsewhere.
Worst moment (with a funny side):
-
lovingboth and
ciphergoth suddenly launching all unstructured into the notoriously incessant legal-organisation argument, at Saturday's plenary. <wince> Er, surely some mistake. But I must admit that it was retrospectively kind of entertaining, in an "aargh! can't watch" kind of way <giggle>
People I thought were attractive and didn't tell: Several, possibly even lots, but not because I was too shy.
Best outfit: Anna-Maria's slinky glamorous green dress!
Coolest person:
hfnuala, appearing amazingly self-possessed and serene, and never too busy to listen.
And of course all the team deserve big respect for having the bottle and tenacity to run the thing at all. Yay BiCon 2002 team!
Some things I plan to do soon:
- Write up the workshop and the interesting things from the wall, and stick the results on the web.
- Add some people (possibly rather a lot) to my LJ friends list, and probably set up some friends groups.
- Do some more badge designs featuring some of the latest cutting-edge themes!
- Update the badge web site with new designs and the ones that were new at BiCon.
- Tell lots of people about the International Celebrate Bisexuality Day thing in Manchester, even though I'm not totally certain yet that I'm going. (Aside to anyone from that team who happens to be reading this: when I looked at the web site last night, it still said the date might be 22 September. But it's definitely fixed for the 29th now, right?)
And now back to ordinary life for a bit...

Date: 2002-08-22 02:27 am (UTC)AFAIK (softfruit n kerry being the experts) it is 29th Sept.
Glad you enjoyed the bellydancing. :)

I'll e-mail you properly soon - if you don't beat me to it. Now there's a challenge for ya!

Date: 2002-08-22 05:50 am (UTC)Honestly, I'm surprised at how much fun running the desk was - it was the right, boundaried (if there is such a word), level of responsibility for me - I didn't end up feeling crap cause I should/could have done more, which has happened to me before in volunteering situations. I may even offer to do it again - but not for several years...
Maybe you should make a 'don't talk to me about Bicon's long-term organisation' badge for next year :) I'm both sorry and happy I missed that plenary.

Date: 2002-08-22 06:26 am (UTC)The other one I would have bet money on was 45th (Queer As Folk) and the one I actually most wanted to be played (Kraftwerk) was 23rd. When I have time, I shall try putting the votes through a few more electoral systems until I find one that works properly :))
Yes, that section of the decision making plenary was a bit of a mess. Paul tells me he only decided to be
irritatingobjectionablethe loyal opposition at the last second. The other problem is that the person who I thought was going to say something was in bed somewhere. And the other other problem is that it's an important but boring sounding topic, so only five people came to the earlier session to talk about it.The very good news is that we think we've found a way to do something to protect the money anyway, in a much simpler way that's covered under the current guidelines...

Single Bass was fab, as always, but later time would have been good. Shame Mike's train got cancelled and he only saw three songs, he wasn't happy about it :(
